part woman, part WTF

Yesterday, a Chicago synthpop band called Hey Champ revealed the sooper-weird video for the song "Neverest", and it's fascinating but completely fucking spooky. It's also probably NSFW. Here it is:

The video is probably the best part about it, because the song is startlingly derivative (Survivor, anyone?) and cheesy to boot. I admit it's catchy.

The Hey Champ video has something in common with an odd newish (2 months old) video for the song "Shoeing The Bones" by English songwriter Cate Le Bon (no relation to Simon), in that there's a human/animal hybrid going on. It is SFW, in my opinion.

The differences are important: the Cate Le Bon song is, to me, absolutely terrific. The video and its oddness are more cleverly compelling (I laughed...out loud!) than carwreck compelling, unlike the Hey Champ video. Lastly, I find Le Bon's influences somewhat more subtle, and therefore less annoying.

Taken together, they make quite a combo. Don't you think?
