friday: seabear + via tania + sóley!

On Friday April 2 Seabear is playing their Chicago debut at Schubas, along with Via Tania and Sóley. I'm looking forward to seeing the Icelandic septet live (that's seven people, people), playing their lush, pleasant music for the beardos and me. They share a lot of qualities with the few Icelandic musicians I'm familiar with (Bjork, Sigur Ros...): thoughtful and gentle, but emotionally heavy.

It comes as no surprise that, given the easy-to-listen qualities of Seabear, NPR digs them. Nor should it come as a surprise that local Chicago support Via Tania sounds a little like Bjork and St. Vincent, all elfin-voxed and music-boxed, while Seabear's own Sóley, who opens the show, whispers her nursery rhymes over a crisp pop piano line. No surprises that it's pretty music.

Of the three, I'm probably most excited about Sóley..
