Everyone by now knows the story of Christine O'Donnell's debate gaffe yesterday, where she questioned the notion that the 'separation of church and state' appears in the Constitution.
Liberals in the audience, and liberal friends of mine, and me too: we all laugh at her. Conservative types defend her by saying the phrase is not in the Constitution.
The phrase itself does not appear in the First Amendment (which technically is in the Bill of Rights, which is technically not in the Constitution itself). However, the separation of church and state is a concept derived through interpretation of the First Amendment; the issue is settled by the Supreme Court. blah blah blah blah bLAH.
I don't give a fuck where it does or does not appear. Religion does not belong in the government, since it is all a bunch of made-up nonsense anyways. In addition, every individual has their own personal beliefs about their chosen brand of made-up nonsense, and for our government to pick one over another is evil and the opposite of freedom.
Finally, the original disagreement between the two politicians was about teaching "creationism" in public schools. There is no question that made-up magical explanations of the origins of life belong nowhere near a public school. You want to teach those lies, teach them in a religious school, or a class about what different religions think, but not a science class. Simple as that. The Bible, as David Cross put it, was written by people who are even dumber than we are today. Religion, and creationism, is an attempt by ignorant humans to explain shit they don't understand. To put that side by side with scientifically derived facts is ridiculous.
End of O'Donnell/Constitution/religion-in-schools rant.
I purposely didn't post this on Facebook because I want Facebook to be fun. That being said, I want my blog to be fun too. I will delete any comment that attempts to argue with me. Write your own blog if you want to rant.
