Yesterday I was talking to a friend about coming up with a plan to hang out on a regular basis. I suggested we do so in a manner that parallels what she calls her husband's "nerd night" of watching sci-fi tv with buddies. Why not Seattle movies, no matter how terrible, since we both grew up (at least partly) on the Eastside from Seattle, met at CWU in Ellensburg, and now suddenly both live in the same place at the same time in far faraway Chicago?
Utilizing my free time and intermittently (?) obsessive tendencies, I used the internet to generate this list of
Movies Made or Set in Significant Proportion in Washington State:
NARRATIVES
1930s-1970s

1980s
1990s
2000s

DOCUMENTARIES
TELEVISION
* seen it
ps: Seeing as this list is ultimately for my own use, I see no reason to include anything related to Twilight, because I really don't want to see those fucking movies. Same goes for any movie that is less than half filmed in Washington, or one where the story isn't necessarily set there, or one in which the action has nothing to do with where it's taking place. That being said, the list is somewhat exhaustive (plus some wishful thinking *coughalmostlivecough*), but nevertheless not comprehensive. Some early scenes in The War of the Roses, for example, were filmed on Whidbey Island, but I'm pretty sure the majority of the action occurs in a house that is located in Los Angeles. Lassie Come Home was filmed partly in Washington state, but also in California and Oregon, and the whole thing is set in England. Dead Man, a film by Jim Jarmusch starring Johnny Depp as William Blake, has footage from the Gorge and Neah Bay, but also a dozen other states in two dozen locations. So I left movies like that off.
All the same, IMDB is an endless rabbit hole of b-movies... finishing this was madness. In fact, I'm probably going to post a revised version of this list with links and fun facts. No joke.
Man, I need a job.
