this is not going away

Earlier today on Facebook, my friend Jeremy posted a status message inviting Bill Cope, a columnist in the Boise Weekly, to kiss his "hairy Mormon butt" over the sentiments expressed in Cope's latest column. Jeremy lives in Boise. Cope uses the fact that many Mormons supported Proposition 8 in California to unload a lot of vitriol. Jeremy said something like "way to use this issue as a platform to lump us all together and attack us." A few of Jeremy's other Facebook friends added comments about what a jerk Cope is, and how narrowminded and unfair he is to judge all Mormons by this one thing.

I added this comment:

"The best part about all your thoughts on this guy and his bigotry is how strongly you decry bigotry in all its forms. I can tell you're not just stung by his attack on your chosen religion, but are also deeply affronted by any attempt to take equal rights away from gay people. It's clear you want all people to be treated as individuals, and not viewed as a monolithic pack of bigots whose tithes funded a hate campaign."

It was the beginning of an afternoon-long commentfest/debate thing. To read the rest, I've posted the remainder in the comments.
