the increasingly smothered soul of this city

So many people I know seem to have a strong memory of the Tuba Man, but my recollection of him is vague at best, and nonexistent at worst. Nevertheless, his story is striking. And leave it to the New York Times to sum Seattle up in a way that is both perfectly on the money, and extremely corny:
"...some say Tuba Man represented the increasingly smothered soul of this city, more substantial and strange than its clichéd sheen of coffee and computers. He was an analog mystery, they say, basso profundo."
